Grade Tracker Settings

The "Grade Tracker" helps students keep progress information up front and center, at the top of mind. It displays a student's current progress in earning points in the course grading scheme. Points are earned by completing course assignments. Bonus points can also be earned in some Delphinium components like Cafeteria Content Map and the Milestone Tracker. Students start at 0 points and an E grade (or the lowest grade in the grading scheme). As points are earned, the bar raises. Students have a clear indication of their final grade at all times if they choose to stop work at that moment. A green bar representing bonus points is added to the top of the blue points and illustrates how bonus points improve the student’s grade.

To promote social comparison and competition, the progress of every student in the class is also displayed in Grade Tracker as a blue dot next to the grading scale and the current student is displayed as an orange and white dot. In this way, students can clearly see how their performance compares to their peers in the class.

In courses where assignment due dates have an even cadence, or no due dates at all, a red line can also be added to the "Grade Tracker" to show where student progress should be at any given time in the class.

Note: "Grade Tracker" should only be used in 0-based courses. Learn more here:

Open the Component Settings

On the Delphinium page, in Teacher or Periscope View, click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the page.

The "Settings" dialog will open.

Click the Delphinium Settings tab in the tab bar at the top of the Settings dialog.

The “Delphinium Settings” tab will be displayed.

The Delphinium Settings tab has two sub tabs, "Course Settings" and "Component Settings." If necessary, click Component Settings.

The "Component Settings" sub tab will be displayed.

If your course has more than one tab, you will see those tabs mirrored in the "secondary tab bar". You may need to click the correct tab in the secondary tab bar to display the icon for the component you wish to edit.

Click the Milestone Tracker icon.

The “Milestone Tracker Settings” dialog will display.

Enable Red Line

The red line represents "now" and moves from the bottom to the top of the meter as the term progresses. It indicates how many points a student should earn in the class at any given moment. The red line starts at the bottom of the meter on the first day of class and steadily moves upwards each day till it reaches the top on the last day of class. Every point from 0 to max points is tied to a specific date.

Note: You should NOT use the red line in your course unless there are no due dates on assignments and/or the due dates are distributed evenly from the beginning to the end of the term. For example, if you include the red line in a class with a large final, students will become frustrated because the red line will communicate that students should have half the points half way through the class, but there will not be that many points available if students are following assignment due dates.

Configure Delphinium and Canvas Course Settings

The "Grade Tracker" uses several Delphinium and Canvas course settings to display properly, including the following:

  1. Set the "course start and end dates" in the course settings

    • The course start and end dates are used to compute the milestone due dates

  2. Set the "max points" in the course settings

    • The start date will be assigned the milestone value of "0"

    • The end date will be assigned the milestone value equal to the "max points" set in the course settings

  3. Configure the Canvas course grading scheme, learn more here.

Note: If there is no Canvas grading scheme configured in the course, delphinium will generate a default grading scheme.
