Variable Text in Delphinium Messages
Delphinium provides a powerful way to customize messages: variable text. Variable text is replaced with current course and student data when messages are generated. This allows you to personalize messages to specific students.
Add Variable Text to a Message
Place your cursor at the point in the text where you want the variable text to appear.
Click the Variable Text drop down box
A list of variable text options will appear
Select a variable text option
A variable text placeholder will be added to your message wrapped in double brackets (e.g., {{Student First Name}})
The place holder will be replaced by student or course data when you preview the message and when the message is sent
Note: Some variable text options can be added to message subjects and textboxes in the layout editor. Some variable text options depend on how your course is configured and may not appear in your course; these are noted below.
Student Variables
Not available in 'One Canvas message for all students', 'Canvas Todo/Events', 'Canvas Announcements', and 'Message teachers and stakeholder only'
Student First Name - Display first name(s) stored in Canvas (Will display multiple first names if they exist)
Student Last Name - Display last name stored in Canvas
Observer Name - Full display name stored in Canvas
Course Points - Total raw points earned, regardless of assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Total Percentage (%-based grading courses only) - Percentage of points earned out of all assignments, regardless of whether or not they have been graded, factoring in assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Graded Percentage (%-based grading courses only) - Percentage of points earned out of graded assignments, including assignments given 0 points, factoring in assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Total Grade (%-based grading courses only) - Letter grade earned for all assignments, according to the Canvas grading scheme, regardless of whether or not they have been graded, factoring in assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Graded Grade (%-based grading courses only) - Letter grade earned for graded assignments, according to the Canvas grading scheme, including assignments given 0 points, factoring in assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Grade (0-based grading courses only) - Letter grade earned, based on percentage of points earned out of the Max Points setting in Delphinium Course settings, according to the Canvas grading scheme, regardless of assignment group weighting
Quality (in 0-based grading courses) - Percent of points earned out of points attempted, regardless of assignment group weights
Quality (in %-based grading courses) - Percentage of points earned out of graded assignments, including assignments given 0 points, factoring in assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas (same as Graded Percentage)
Percentile - Students position in the rank order of all students in the class
Page View Count - The number of times a user has received data from a Canvas server, this number can be larger than expected because a single page load may require many server data requests
Participation Count - The count of student actions in a course, including posting an announcement, loading a collaboration, joining a web conference, posting to a discussion, creating a page, submitting a quiz, starting a quiz, submitting an assignment
Course Points + B/P Balance (in courses with Milestone Tracker or Cafeteria Style only) - Total raw points earned, regardless of assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas, plus bonus points generated by Delphinium components minus penalty points generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium bonus and penalty points are not visible in Canvas grades)
Penalty (in courses with Milestone Tracker) - Penalty points generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium penalty points are not visible in Canvas grades)
Bonus (in courses with Milestone Tracker or Cafeteria Style only) - Bonus points generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium bonus points are not visible in Canvas grades)
Bonus/Penalty Balance (in courses with Milestone Tracker or Cafeteria Style only) - Bonus points generated by Delphinium components minus penalty points generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium bonus and penalty points are not visible in Canvas grades)
Red line gap (in courses with Milestone Tracker only) - The number of points above or below the Milestone Tracker's redline that the student's course points (unweighted) currently is
Course Variables
Teacher Name - Full display name, as stored in Canvas, for the message sender, as configured on the message People tab
Course Name - Course name as configured in the Canvas course settings
Today's Date - Today's date
First Day of Class - The Start Date listed in Delphinium Course Settings
Last Day of Class - The End Date listed in Delphinium Course Settings

Only available in "Message teachers and stakeholder only"
Average Points - Average total raw points earned for all students, regardless of assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas
Average Total Points (in courses with Milestone Tracker or Cafeteria Style only) - Average total raw points earned for all students, regardless of assignment group weighting, as stored in Canvas, plus bonus points generated by Delphinium components minus penalty points generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium bonus and penalty points are not visible in Canvas grades)
Average Penalty (in courses with Milestone Tracker) - Average penalty points for all students generated by Delphinium components (Delphinium penalty points are not visible in Canvas grades)

Assignment Name - Name of assignment as stored in Canvas
Assignment Points Possible - Points possible for assignment as stored in Canvas
Assignment Score - If assignment is graded, points a student earned on assignment
Assignment Percent - If assignment is graded, percent of points a student earned on assignment
Submitted Status - Assignment submitted status for a student: Is submitted, is not submitted
Graded Status - Assignment graded status for a student: Is graded, is not graded
Gradebook Status - Assignment gradebook status for a student: Is missing, is late, is excused, is not excused

Progress Block
Not available in 'One Canvas message for all students', 'Canvas Todo/Events', and 'Canvas Announcements'. Users can select or omit these options, and change their order. Configurable list of student progress data in a course including the following options:

Conditional Content Block
User creates a block of content and a rule. If the rule is true, then the content will be added to the message.
List Students Who... Block
Only available in "Message teachers and stakeholder only"
User defines a rule, the names of all students who match that rule are added to a bulleted list in the message
